Since before the COVID-19 global pandemic, fans all over the planet have been longing to hear Dua Lipa live. On February 9th, 2022, Dua finally kicked off her Future Nostalgia World Tour at the FTX Arena in Miami, Florida. “We’ve been waiting two years to put on this show for you all,” Dua bellowed to her adoring audience. The tour was originally announced in December 2019 and was postponed three times.
Dua’s sophomore album, Future Nostalgia, released on March 27th, 2020, fuses the classic musical eras of the Seventies and Eighties with the modern sounds we recognize and listen to today. In a 2021 Billboard article, Dua explained that when she was writing the album, she envisioned her songs being played in clubs and nights out with friends.
Opening acts Lolo Zouaï and Caroline Polachek got the crowd pumped up for Dua’s arrival. Following some disco classics playing between the opening sets, the arena lights shut off as Purple Disco Machine’s “Body Funk” blasted through the speakers. Soon after, the musical intro of “Physical” resonated throughout the arena as Dua (and her dancers) emerged on the stage, singing her heart out. Following “Physical,” Dua transitioned into her 2017 breakout single “New Rules.” Fun Fact: the music video was shot at the Confidante Hotel down the road in Miami Beach. Other familiar hits from the show include “Love Again,” “Break My Heart,” “One Kiss,” “Electricity,” “Hallucinate,” “Cold Heart,” and even a nostalgic favorite for the original fans, “Be the One,” as well as other Dua songs fans know and love. For the encore, Dua sang the title from her second album and tour, “Future Nostalgia,” before closing out with her first single off Future Nostalgia, “Don’t Start Now.”
In designing the tour, Lipa paid careful attention to her visual production as well, with Miami Vice-esque style logos, an Eighties style video montage introducing her dancers, people skating on lit-up roller skates, umbrellas, red balloons, a massive lobster prop, flashing lights, laser effects, twinkling stars and colorful balls resembling planets. Throughout the show, Dua took her fans both under the sea with “We’re Good” and throughout the galaxy with her latest hit “Levitating,” while she rose over her general admission fans! Even the tour costumes were eclectic, with Dua having four different outfit changes: a neon yellow bodysuit with matching neon yellow gloves, a shimmery silver one piece with a white train, Eighties’ style street gear featuring neon pink leggings and finally a sparkling beige & black bodysuit.
With high energy, Dua powered through an incredibly dynamic 90-minute, 18-song set. From her compelling vocals and mesmerizing dance moves to her anthem style track “Boys Will Be Boys,” a song about the many challenges women face in a patriarchal world, Dua both naturally and successfully commanded the room throughout the entire show.
