After taking a brief hiatus following their sophomore EP ‘Siren + Light,’ Nashville based band Lost Stars have returned with a vibrant and distinct new sound.
This sonic signature is highlighted in their latest release “I Don’t Know You Anymore.”
We chatted with the rising pop group about the new single, its paint splattered video and more.
How did you all first get interested in music?
Music was a big part of all our lives growing up. Our families all played a big role, especially in the car. As we started growing up a bit more, we were able to use it as an escape from hard times in our lives. Ya know, crying ourselves to sleep in 7th grade listening to The Fray after not being allowed to sit with the cool kids at lunch and what not.
How did you all get connected?
Damian and Charley went to the high school and played in a band together, and then moved to Nashville for college. Once Charley was there, he and Trey became roommates by potluck. They geeked out over Explosions in the Sky right before move-in, and had the greatest revelation of “wait — you’re weird too!?”
Where does the name Lost Stars come from?
Have you ever seen the movie ‘Begin Again’ with Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley? It’s a feel-good romantic story about the music scene, and we watched it like six times the semester we became a band. The leading song in the movie is called “Lost Stars.”
How would you describe your sound?
Enjoyable to listen to.
Who did you all listen to growing up and do they influence your music today?
We all grew up with so much variety, but a lot of rock, pop, and alternative. Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Coldplay, One Republic, Paramore. And of course the more old-school stuff like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Journey, Kansas, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty. Yes they all influence us! We’re at a point now that we can make more conscientious decisions in the writing and production rooms to keep our sound moving forward, while still utilizing what has been ingrained in us.
What was the inspiration for your new single, “I Don’t Know You Anymore”?
The song’s about finally realizing that the person you’re in a failing relationship with isn’t who you thought they were. You’re at that point when you know that the work you’ve been putting in to it won’t get you any further with it, and it’s time to move on with your life.
What was the writing process like?
Very group therapy-like. Four people in a room talking about our feelings and telling stories about how we’ve found some hard truths. And then making it rhyme.
What was the inspiration for the music video?
This has been a pretty rough year for the world. We wanted to put into something fun and light-hearted.
What was it like filming the splatter paint sequence?
Amazeballs. Cold. Chaotic. Kind of metallic tasting.
If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to “I Don’t Know You Anymore,” what do you imagine it looking like?
Wherever your favorite place in the world to listen to music to is. We’re partial to solo headphone listening though 😉
What can fans look forward to next?
Soooo instead of playing a ton of shows this year (hmm, I wonder why we’re not doing that), we’ve been busy writing and producing more songs. We’ve got a lot in various stages of the process that we’re figuring out what to do with.
What is one quote that you have heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?
“You do you.”
