Devon Gilfillian is currently the support act for Grace Potter on her 2020 North American Tour. However, with his high-energy and engaging performance, Gilfillian’s set would better be described as a foundation for the sold-out night at House of Blues Boston.
The genre-bending singer-songwriter’s charisma and natural stage presence carried through his set, from singing “Unchained,” an anthem about resilience and growth despite setbacks, to “Get Out and Get It,” full of imagery and a catchy beat.
The 8 songs Gilifillian included in his set reflected the musical influences he has gained over the years; from growing up singing, playing guitar, and exploring classic rock and R&B in his musical family, to performing a broad repertoire in college in a local cover band.
The exploration continued when Gilfillian moved to Nashiville in 2013 where he was able to focus on his own sound, resulting in his 2016 self-titled EP, and multiple singles. This led him to a deal with Capitol Records, tours with The Fray, Keith Urban, and Anderson East, and now Grace Potter, to name a few.
Highlights of the set included an emotion-filled performance of “Even Though It Hurts,” with Gilfillian falling to his knees while holding out the last note of the song, and an elongated instrumental in “Troublemaker,” where he had the crowd pull out their phones to provide light for a photo.
Gilfillian and his band made the House of Blues their own, holding the audience’s attention, conveying a wide range of emotions through the songs played, and successfully creating a high-energy environment for Grace Potter.
Gilfillian will continue touring with Potter until February 20, 2020. From there he will play sets at Sandjam Musical Festival, Bonnaroo, and Firefly Music Festival, while Potter will continue her North American Tour through the end of March.
