It’s hard to “Believe” that Cher’s iconic hit is 25 years old!
Released via Warner Brothers Records in 1998, “Believe” has charted worldwide and is Cher’s top song on Spotify, with over 5 million streams.
In a sit-down interview with TODAY, the legendary singer was asked about her thoughts on the milestone anniversary. “It’s not that amazing, OK? Pisses me — it pisses the f–k out of me,” she joked.
Despite the 77-year-old’s discomfort with aging, it’s impossible to ignore the impact of the release on music history.
The dance-pop anthem was the first to experiment with a newly invented autotune. Originally created by Dr. Andy Hildebrand in 1997 to correct pitch, the revolutionary studio tool introduced Cher and music fans to a new sound.
Twenty-five years later, Cher continues to experiment with new sounds. This holiday season, she released her first-ever Christmas album featuring duets with Michael Bublé, Cyndi Lauper, and Stevie Wonder.
“So I called him, and I was like really nervous, and I said Stevie, I did a song, and I can’t do part of it really well,” she shared with TODAY of how the iconic Stevie duet came to fruition, “But there is some part of it I can’t do, and I need you to come do it. He said, consider it done. Then I ran around my room – I swear to god. I ran around my room screaming, Stevie Wonder is going to be on my album.”
The album also features a duet with Darlene Love, whom Cher sang backup for in 1963 when she was only 17.
Cher still hasn’t found a way to turn back time, but her music remains timeless even after all these years.
