Ariana Grande Has a Message for Critics in New Anthem “yes, and?”

The internet has been buzzing since Ariana Grande posted a BTS photo dump to her Instagram with the caption, “see you next year ♡.” Four years after her last musical release, the pop star has finally returned with the first track off her seventh studio album and a message for the haters, “yes, and?”

Over her decade-long music career, trolls and the media have had a lot to say about her behavior, her looks, and her relationships. Although not unusual for anyone in the public eye, it’s difficult to take nonetheless. In this new anthem, she demonstrates that she’s developed a thick skin and encourages others to do the same.

In verse two, Grande sings, “now I’m so done with caring, what you think, no I won’t hide, underneath your own projections, or change my most authentic life.”

She continues into the bridge with, “my face is sitting I don’t need no disguise, don’t comment on my body, do not reply, your business is yours and mine is mine, why do you care so much whose…I ride.”

The lyrics written by Grande with Ilya Slmanzadeh and Max Martin (No Tears Left to Cry) are charged by a dance beat reminiscent of Madonna’s own 80s self-love anthem, “Express Yourself” and “Vogue.”

The song’s release was accompanied by a music video directed by Christian Breslauer (Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Lizzo, and SZA). In the visual, Grande wins over a skeptical audience and “Breaks Free” of constraints with her authenticity. She literally and figuratively shatters expectations as she transforms from a stone sculpture to be commented on into a human being with emotions.

This is also beautifully demonstrated through Will Loftis’ choreography.

The video draws inspiration from another 80s icon, Paula Abdul. Her video for “Cold Hearted” also follows unassuming critics into a fosse-esque dance performance. In an X post, Abdul noted the honor, “WOW! Waking up to see Ariana Grande pay homage to “Cold Hearted” in her new music video “yes, and?” was EVERYTHING!!!”

Only twelve days into 2024, Grande is already proving she will dominate this year. On November 24, the highly anticipated Wicked film will be released, with Grande starring as Glinda.
