REVIEW: Barbie: The Album, It’s Fantastic, It’s Such a Classic

Let’s delve into the mesmerizing music that accompanies the most anticipated movie of the decade so far. The brilliance of Mark Ronson as the producer becomes apparent in his vibrant fusion of genres, blending pop, funk, soul, and R&B seamlessly. Renowned for his exceptional production skills and keen attention to detail, Ronson crafts infectious beats and catchy melodies that enchant listeners, bringing together today’s biggest pop stars in a collective dream house of music.

Dua Lipa graces the dream house album with “Dance The Night,” a disco-infused track that pays homage to her hit album, “Future Nostalgia,” creating a groovy continuation of her musical journey. Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice join the highly anticipated album, infusing the classic theme song “Barbie World” with Aqua’s flair. Meanwhile, Charli XCX takes the driver’s seat for the adrenaline-filled “Speed Drive,” complementing the movie’s visually stunning and vibrant viewing experience with its fast-paced energy.

Billie Eilish lends her beautiful and emotive voice to “What Was I Made For,” contributing to the film’s emotional depth with haunting vocals that provoke introspection and meaning. Ava Max brings her anthemic touch to “Choose Your Fighter,” infusing it with her signature sound characterized by energetic, anthemic, and catchy elements of dance-pop, electronic, and synth-pop genres.

Sam Smith takes on the Ken diva theme song “Man I Am,” channeling retro VHS workout vibes, while Ryan Gosling delivers a desperately melodramatic solo on his shining moment “I’m Jus Ken,” perfectly suited for Ken’s grand entrance.

The album’s musical range is captivating, from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s rap link-up to HAIM’s soft indie balladry on “Home,” and FIFTY FIFTY’s bubblegum-pop moment on “Barbie Dreams” featuring Kaliii. Even Tame Impala makes a surprising appearance, with Kevin Parker’s spacey synth-scape hitting the mark on “Journey To The Real World.”

“Barbie: The Album” shines as a standout collection, blending fun and playfulness with a commitment to the fuchsia-filtered, Barbie world blueprint created by Gerwig, Ronson, and the cast. With the exception of a few gentler respites, like Billie Eilish’s tender “What Was I Made For?,” the album beckons listeners to their feet, inviting them to join the “giant blowout party with all the barbies” they’ve been eagerly waiting for and guiding them straight onto the dance floor.
