I’m not a fan.
That’s something I never, ever thought I’d say about the Jonas Brothers – and I don’t say it lightly. I’ve been in love with the group since I was a kid, so this is a hard piece to write.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Brothers as a group – everything else they’ve made is on a constant rotation in my playlist. I am just not a fan of their new song, “No Time To Talk.”
For their new single off of their upcoming album, Greetings From Your Hometown, the group weaves in the 70s classic “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees, interpolating its iconic chorus with the line: “’Cause I can tell by the way you use your walk, that you came to dance, no time to talk.”
While I enjoy hearing the tune pop up from time to time, I don’t think this works for me here. I love the Jonas Brothers for the way they’ve always carved out their own original space in the music world, writing and creating every piece they put out (aside from a few early 2000’s hits, like “Year 3000,” which I was shocked to find out is a cover). This song doesn’t scream “Jonas” to me – and maybe that’s what they were aiming for.
I think this is an important lesson, though: you don’t have to like everything your favorite artist puts out. Artists can experiment, try different sounds and genres, collaborate with different people, and totally shift their image; that’s the fun of being an artist. People can change, artist or not. Regardless, I’m still excited to download the album the second it comes out on August 8!
Would I still die at the altar of Jonas? Absolutely. Do I need to add this specific song to my playlist? Maybe not.
Take a listen and let us know your thoughts.
