With a sound that echos Jon Bellion and Shawn Mendes, Nashville based artist, Kevin Kolk is an artist to add to your summer playlist.

At only 16 years old, Kolk has developed a sound that is somewhat familiar, yet undeniably one of a kind.

“I wanted to take risks with my music. I work to create a style that is unique to me, both lyrically and musically,” Kolk says.

Kolk’s creativity and talent is threaded through all aspects of his music. Not only is he a singer and songwriter, but he also produces and plays various instruments; including guitar, piano and drums.

In his debut single “Deep End,” Kolk displays these talents by using many of his skills to create a pop beat with lyrics that cut deep. The result leaves listeners ruminating the lyrics, beat and impact of the track.

ECHO had a chance to chat with Kolk about songwriting, inspiration and his music.

Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from lots of music to find my own unique sound. Some of my biggest influences are Lauv, LANY, Trove, and Jon Bellion.

You’re a singer, writer and producer. What is your writing process? Do the lyrics or the music come first?
Every song is different for me. Sometimes starting with lyrics helps me be creative and experimental, sometimes starting with the music helps me set a mood for the whole session, and sometimes it’s both.

When you’re not writing, producing, or performing, what do you enjoy doing?
I spend a lot of time at the lake wake surfing, skiing, and wake boarding with my family.  I also spend time training for cross country and track. It is a great outlet for me and lets me spend some time on things outside of music.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I would describe myself as a pop singer/songwriter and guitar player who also likes to produce

You’ve covered a lot of different artists on your instagram; including Billie Eillish, Post Malone and Jon Bellion. If you were able to collaborate with any of them, who would you love to collaborate with?
If I could collaborate with anyone, it would probably be Jon Bellion. I love that he is willing to take risks and that he is a great songwriter.

You’re debut single, Deep End is out July 19.What is the message behind the song?
I wrote “Deep End” about dealing with anxiety and wondering if it gets better. It’s about keeping hope in hard situations.

Why do you feel it is important to address issues like anxiety in your music?
I try to write music that is 100% me.  I create a connection to the song if I’m dealing with topics that are personal. Anxiety is one of those topics for me.
And, if anyone can relate to the topic, it may help them too.

What can fans expect from your EP coming out this fall?
I’ve been working on this project for over a year. I share lots of personal thoughts and feelings, and created a sound that resonates with those lyrics. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it all.

You’re one of 5 kids. Are your four siblings as musical as you are?
I have a twin sister who is more of an athlete and likes to listen to music, but we can stop there (love ya sis).  One brother is a sports fanatic. And my other brother plays trumpet and is pretty talented. And my youngest sister dances (7 years old)  but definitely has the ear for music, so better watch out.

What is one thing you’d like to ECHO out to the world?
