Three years have flown by since Brooklyn artist Cautious Clay released his breakout single, “Cold War.” Between three EP’s and features in notable television and movie soundtracks, Clay continues to create music that moves and resonates.
His latest single, “Wildfire” is a captivating R&B, hip hop and indie pop track, which explores, “the fact that people’s intentions sometimes get lost in translation,” says Clay. “Good intention is not always enough to prevent people’s emotions and insecurities from spiraling. Subtle signals or cues can unintentionally ignite emotions—like a brush fire.”
Clay adds to the sentimental nature of the single with a stripped-down live version that features echoed guitars and enchanting flute.
“Wildfire” can be heard on Clay’s debut album ‘Deadpan Love’ out June 25. Written alongside notable co-writers including Tobias Jesso Jr.(Adele, HAIM), Jim-E Stack (Caroline Polachek, Empress Of), Daniel Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, FINNEAS), Jesse Shatkin (Sia, Kelly Clarkson), Ammar Malik (Maroon 5, Halsey) and Sir Nolan (Shawn Mendes, Selena Gomez), the album, “explores the ways I cope with the worst of what humanity has to offer,” says Cautious. “It’s about opposites—having an outer layer that’s tougher, this “deadpan” state, and an inner layer of compassion, where you’re open to being there for the people you care about. It’s this warring compassion and cynicism that has empowered me to express myself through this medium,” Clay shared.
