On April 11, the Orpheum Theater became “Daryl’s House” for one night only.
Fans filled the Boston venue for an evening packed with nostalgia.
Todd Rundgren got things rocking with hits like “We Gotta Get You A Woman” and “Buffalo Grass.” His showmanship, skipping from one side of the stage to the other and shredding his “pearly” white guitar drew whistles and cheers from the crowd.
Rundgren’s throwback performance transported many back to their youth, punctuating memories with each note.
The reminiscing continued as rock and roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall took the stage. Backed by his house band, Hall celebrated the release of his BeforeAfter solo album with an in person version of his popular online show “Daryl’s House.”
Surrounded by candelabras and bright lights, a neon “Daryl’s House” sign, and a banner of his home/set, Daryl played songs like “Dreamtime” and “Problem With You.”
Like his latest album, the set featured new and old songs, including Hall and Oates songs like “Sara Smiles” and “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).”
Hall’s diverse set included songs he wrote for Paul Young and other artists, as well as covers like Eurythmics’ “Here Comes The Rain Again,” a single co-written by one of Hall’s collaborators, Dan Stewart. He put his own spin on the 80s classics, including a sax solo performed by Charles DeChant.
For the encore, Hall returned to the stage with Rundgren for a performance of “Wait For Me” and “Can We Still Be Friends.” Both Philadelphia natives, Hall and Rundgren delighted the audience with a duet of “Expressway to Your Heart,” a song by 60’s Philly band, Soul Survivor.
Before Hall and the crowd erupted into Hall and Oates’ “You Make My Dreams,” he yelled to the audience “Let’s end on a high note.”
“I love you guys. I’ll be seeing you again,” Hall called out as he waved and left the stage.
