Back in April of 2017, Katy Perry went to see Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway. The singer wrote on Thursday (November 1st) recalling how she was “emotionally transformed forever.” In her own life, she said, “I’ve struggled with depression, and like so many, always feeling alone in the battle of wanting to belong.”
One of the songs from the show that really got her was “Waving Through a Window,” which the singer said “embodied mental isolation I sometimes fought.” That’s why when the show’s creators, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul asked Perry to re-record the song to help launch the show’s national tour and continue the conversation on mental health, she was all in.
The song’s inspiring lyrics is about overcoming adversity: “Step out, step out of the sun/ If you keep getting burned/ Step out, step out of the sun/ Because you’ve learned, because you’ve learned/ On the outside, always looking in/ Will I ever be more than I’ve always been?/ ‘Cause I’m tap, tap, tapping on the glass/ I’m waving through a window/ I try to speak, but nobody can hear.”
Katy Perry brought her voice and own story to the song making it that much more special. Take a listen to Perry’s version below!
