Country pop group, The Buckleys have climbed the charts in Australia with breezy tracks like their #1 single “Daydream.” Now the sibling trio is sharing their “Hippy Country” sound internationally.
Their latest EP Take It As It Comes released via Petrol/UMe is a feel-good follow up to their debut album. Featuring catchy songs like “Oops I Love You,” it’s hard not to fall for The Buckleys.
We chatted with Sarah, Lachlan, and Molly Buckley about the EP, new music, and more!
Congrats on the release of your debut album, Daydream, and now your EP Take It As It Comes. What was the production process like for the EP?
Sarah: Thank you! We actually tracked the EP for the most part in one day (with some added overdubs / vocals added later) but it was a really quick process. The band recorded it live in the room together, which is a really important part of our process and sound as a band – we love a live band, playing together, connecting and feeling that energy from musicians being in the same room.
What is it like to work together as siblings? How has it helped the process?
Lachlan: Working together as siblings is great, we can be brutally honest with each other and have massive fights but be totally cool 10 minutes later and forget that it ever happened. Its helped the music process significantly because we all know exactly what the other is thinking without saying a word while we’re playing, living together all our lives has brought us closer musically due the fact that we can play together whenever we want and not have anything stopping us but the neighbours.
You grew up in the Byron Bay Area of Australia. How did that area influence your music, specifically this project?
Molly: Growing up in an area where creativity is so supported and nourished within the community has been awesome. Being surrounded by lots of creative minds from such a young age definitely helped us and gave us the freedom to grow as artists.
What was the inspiration for the first single off the EP, “Oops I Love You”?
Molly: This was such a fun song to write lyrically. We wanted the lyrics to come from the perspective of a woman who is holding her own power, it’s not a love song where she needs this dude in her life to be happy which I really love. Its cheeky and fun!
How did recording and writing at East Iris, in Studio A in Nashville inspire the song?
Sarah: East Iris is such a creative place and everything about it is inspiring as a creative! The funky artwork and colour that covers each wall, the musical history that it holds. This song especially has such a fun and funky spunk about it which really feels right at home at East Iris! It feels like they go hand in hand with each other and you could totally see how the song was recorded at this groovy place!
Do you have a favorite memory from creating the EP?
Lachlan: My favourite memory from the EP would be creating it in the studio and the process it took to get it to where it is now, recording the songs and writing them is so enjoyable and it takes your creativity to a whole other level when you travel than if you were just at home.
Your Dad is also a musician. What’s your favorite piece of advice that your dad has given you?
Molly: We are super lucky to have the parents we have, they’re so awesome and supportive of us and our goals. From day one they always told us to trust our gut and stay true to ourselves, It’s helped us navigate so many tricky situations!
If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to the EP, what do you imagine it looking like?
Sarah: Roadtrip! I just love putting on a record on the road, singing your heart out in your car – whether your with friends or driving on your own, listening to music on the road just feels right!
What can fans look forward to next?
Sarah: We’re really excited to bring our live show to audiences far and wide! The live aspect of what we do is so important for us and a whole other creative outlet in a way – if we’re touring near you, we would love to come rock out with you so come say hi at a show! And of course, the music will constantly evolve so we’re really excited about what we’re writing and creating for the next project already.
What is one quote that you heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?
“Take It As it Comes” …. and not just because that’s the title track to the EP haha
