Following her summer hit “Could’ve Just Left Me Alone,” Alexa Cappelli processes a “summer situationship” on her latest single “Temporary.”
Alexa authentically delves into her emotions and comes to terms with her decision. Through rousing verses and an explosive chorus, she questions “What’s love if it’s temporary?”
We chatted with the rising pop singer-songwriter about the empowering single, writing her upcoming debut album, and more!
What is the inspiration behind your new single “Temporary”?
“Temporary” was the song I really needed after I ended a short-lived summer fling last August. It was difficult because the feelings I had were so real, but I also knew we wanted different things, and that it wouldn’t be fair of me to ask him to change. A few months after we stopped speaking, I finally started to believe that it was for the better and that I did make the right decision.
What was the writing process like?
I wrote it with a friend I made on TikTok, Hannah Trager, when I visited Nashville in December 2021. We wrote it on her bedroom floor with just her guitar and my slowly healing heart. I usually have tweaks and changes I make when listening back to a song after a week or two of writing it and this song had virtually none. I am so proud of it, and how authentic it is to my story.
Did you find that writing the song helped you process the end of that situationship. If so, how?
This song validated my perspective, of letting go of something good for maybe something even better. The guy was so great and kind and caring, but if I were to go forward, I knew it would have ended. I learned that being uncomfortable is good when there’s growth on the other side.
On instagram you wrote “long story short i really needed this song this time last year.” What do you hope this song is for listeners?
If I had “Temporary” last year I may not have hit my head so many times against a metaphorical wall trying to figure out if I was justified in walking away, when on paper there wasn’t much wrong. I am really grateful for my friends who got in my shoes to remind me who I am and that it’s impossible to forfeit what is truly meant for me. I hope this song can be to those who hear it, what my friends’ voices were to me. Exactly one year later, this song is coming out!
If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to the single, what do you imagine it looking like?
I’m picturing us all jumping around, or even laying down on a crowded trampoline and I don’t know why. This song feels very conversational, but it also feels like the perfect song to set you up for locking in and maybe even resetting your standards and desired traits in a partner. And I love trampolines. <3
Congrats on your signing to Arista Records. What can fans look forward to next?
I am currently writing my debut album!! I have been learning so much about myself, processing my experiences, and have loved building this world that revolves around all of it, with love at the center. It’s also crazy to think about this project as setting the scene for the many albums to come with the longevity of my career. There will always be a next! My love for music is not temporary.
What is one quote that you have heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?
There is never a better time to start than right now. Time is going to go by anyway, and no matter where you step, it will lead you to the next one. Love first and always!
