If you grew up in the late 90s to 2000s, it’s hard not to get hyped at the thought of an Usher show. The R&B superstar returned to Boston’s TD Garden on Wednesday, Aug. 28 — the second of two nights — for another spectacular performance as part of his “Past Present Future” nationwide tour.
Usher’s “Past Present Future” tour, in support of his ninth studio album “Coming Home,” marks nine years since his last headlining tour wrapped up in 2015. Wednesday’s concert spanned three decades of music, featuring impressive choreography, costume changes, and stage design. The show opened with pictures of Usher on a large screen, superimposed with flashing overlays and text, and a swift transition into the first track off the new album, “Coming Home (with Burna Boy).” Only a mere silhouette at first, Usher glided across the stage donning his signature fedora and a long black coat bedazzled in hundreds of sequins. As he eased into the subsequent songs, “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” and “BIG,” so did his backup dancers into a more lively routine closer to the edge of the stage.
Usher’s several sold out shows on this tour are a testament to his impact on contemporary culture and music history, but so is the wide range of people who attend his thrilling performances — Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha alike.
