The Band CAMINO ‘Bruises’: A Flawless Telling of Past and Present

The Band CAMINO can’t seem to make a bad song; it’s just not in their DNA. Known for their wistful and electric indie tracks, you’re bound to have their songs stuck in your head for days — and happily so.

The Nashville-based trio released a surprise EP titled Bruises on May 17. Although The Band CAMINO has been actively working for almost a decade, Bruises feels like the first time the group is truly making art for themselves without the added pressure from people outside the band.

Someone Who’s Trying,” the first track on the project, depicts someone asking for forgiveness for their past mistakes in a relationship. Like many of the band’s songs, this track relies heavily on piano and drums. The chorus repeats with: “Can I learn to live?/When I know I’m dying?” As the lyrics build, so do the instrumentals to create an ambitious yet familiar sense of urgency.

The EP was released to highlight the band’s single “Nostalgia,” which is the second track on the project. The track focuses on the guitar with riffs and chords that make you want to dance as you listen to lyrics wishing for easier times. The song is fun and relatable, ultimately creating harmony for listeners and critics alike.

Bruises,” the third and final track on the EP, begins similarly to a ballad, but grows into a moving piece about a breakup. The opening verse evokes a nostalgic feeling that the band emphasizes with words: “Whatever it was that came between us/Between popcorn ceilings and magazine dust.”

The Band CAMINO’s EP does an incredible job of invoking feelings of nostalgia and regret while still maintaining a sense of relaxation and liveliness. Bruises creates a sense of community and excitement found in youth, despite the issues and anxieties they face in adulthood.
