31st Annual SAG Awards: Wicked and Shōgun Lead TV and Motion Picture Categories with Five Nominations Each

On January 8, SAG-AFTRA announced their nominations for the 31st Annual SAG Awards®. The event will honor “outstanding stunt, individual, cast and ensemble performances for the past year,” as noted in a press release announcing the nominations.

In the wake of the devastating fires raging through Southern California and out of respect for the Los Angeles community, SAG-AFTRA decided to forgo their traditional live broadcast, to be hosted by actors Joey King and Cooper Koch, and announced the nominations via a press release.

In the release, SAG-AFTRA wrote, “Our thoughts are with everyone impacted — the residents, first responders, and all those working tirelessly to protect the community,” they wrote and encouraged people to, “Please consider donating to a charity of your choice to help those in need. To support impacted members of our artist community, donations can be made to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which operates a natural disaster relief fund.”

Wicked led the Motion Picture categories with an impressive five nominations. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo earned nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role and a Leading Role. Their co-star Jonathan Bailey, who has had the internet swooning over his Wicked performance, also earned a nod for Male Actor in a Supporting Role. The Wicked Cast and Stunt Ensemble were also recognized.

Trailing close behind were A Complete Unknown and Anora, as well as Best Motion Picture Golden Globe winner Emilia Pérez with three nominations each.

Following their emotional Golden Globes wins, both Demi Moore (The Substance) and Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) were recognized with nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female and Male Actor in a Leading Role.

Notably missing from the Female Actor categories were Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Zendaya (Challengers), and Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door).

In the Television categories, Shōgun came out on top with five nominations. Two of those nominations were for Golden Globe winners Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano who were both nominated for Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Bridgerton, which was notably absent from the Golden Globes, was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for Nicola Coughlan as Penelope Featherington.

The night’s host Kristen Bell was also nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in A Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role in Nobody Wants This. This will be Bell’s second time hosting the SAG Awards. The last time she hosted was back in 2018 for the 29th Annual SAG Awards.

For the second year in a row, the ceremony will be streamed on Netflix live from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall. Tune in on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT to find out who wins!
