Last fall, Remi Wolf embarked on her first ever headlining tour. The “Gwingle Gwongle” Tour wasn’t just memorable because of the name, it also inspired Remi to write her sophomore album, “Big Ideas.” The record was a compilation of 13 stories from the road that ranged from “sexcapades” to lonely hotel stays. Nearly a year later, Wolf is returning to the cities that inspired those “Big Ideas” to perform them live for sold-out crowds.
UK artist Lava La Rue opened the show at Boston’s MGM Fenway with a smoldering performance of “Better.” Hailing from London, La Rue was thrilled to have their family join them in Boston for their first-ever trip to the United States. Among them was their proud grandmother, watching from the crowd.
La Rue’s performance began behind the comfort of a microphone and guitar, but as the crowd got into the music and headbanged to “Manifestation Manifesto,” La Rue dropped the guitar and fluffy ushanka hat to flip their braids and rock out.
Their 9 song setlist also featured selections from their debut album “Starface,” including “Shell of You,” a song which they revealed they were “quite scared to release because it was quite different” from their earlier work.
However, being bold and unexpected is what makes an artist stand out from the crowd, a concept that Remi Wolf has wholeheartedly embraced.
As the first few notes of “Cherries & Cream” began to play, Remi descended down the stairs through a glowing cloud of fog. “As the temporary leader of the next hour and a half, I would like to unite my energy, my band’s energy, and your energy together,” Wolf declared as the crowd looked on in wonder.
As Wolf continued to play through the 17-song setlist, Wolf, her band, and the crowd fully embraced the challenge of matching each other’s energy, so much so that it stopped Wolf in her tracks, “Holy shit – the energy is electric tonight!”
Throughout the night, Wolf shared the unexpected stories behind the songs on “Big Ideas,” including “Alone in Miami,” which she recalls as “the craziest four days of my life.”
Other setlist highlights included “Sexy Villain” with a Bossanova twist and an improvised song based on the audience suggested word, “Shark.”
Last summer, Wolf lent her storytelling skills to the Prime Video series “I’m A Virgo.” Her song “Prescription” soundtracked an intimate scene between Cootie, a 13 foot giant, and Flora, a “Speedster” who can move at super speed.
Before charging into “Toro,” Wolf sat at the edge of the stage and teased, “This song has a similar story. It was about a 13 foot penis…just kidding it was about 8 inches.”
Wolf ended the night dressed in a Red Sox jersey for an encore of a fan favorite, “Photo ID.”
We can’t wait to hear the songs inspired by this tour!
