GALLERY: Toro y Moi Embraces Counter Culture on ‘Hole Erth’ Tour

Toro y Moi, a project of Chaz Bear, is kicking off the new year with a 17-stop headlining tour. The trek draws inspiration from primal and countercultural influences, including the DIY periodical Whole Earth Catalog and the gorpcore fashion movement—both of which helped shape his eighth full-length album, “Hole Erth.”

On his website, Bear explains, “Things have gone in a more gorp-y direction. Humans are tapping into this more tribal, earthier aesthetic. The Whole Earth catalog is this encyclopedic, self-sustaining guide. With the album title alone, that’s something I wanted to spark as a conversation. We can be off the grid, and also be on the internet, and try out all of these different lifestyles at the same time.”

On February 12, the genre-bending artist launched into an 18-song set at Boston’s Roadrunner, weaving through rap, rock, and electronic sounds. Joined by Panda Bear, as well as Nourished By Time, the Daria artist performed selections from the new album alongside fan favorites from Toro y Moi’s discorgraphy like “The Difference.”
