Alternative and electronic pop duo Phantogram returned to Boston for their first headlining show in the city since 2019 at the House of Blues last Monday. They’ve made a few stops in and around the city since then, with a performance at In Between Days fest in nearby Quincy, MA in August of 2023, as well as a stop at Boston’s MGM Music Hall right across the street last year opening for Kings of Leon. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter clearly know how to put on a show, and how to design one too. Dark lighting painted Barthel in a silhouette for much of the night, and an abundance of strobes made for some cool, dark visuals, especially as Barthel made her way around the stage, headbanging and high-kicking to the catchy rhythms of their songs.
Fans anxiously awaited the band to take the stage, which they did around 9:15 p.m. following an opening performance by meija. First up was a performance of “Jealousy” off of their newest album “Memory of a Day,” for which this latest tour is in support of. Next up were “Don’t Move” and “Fall in Love,” which the crowd were clearly excited to see. During some songs, a blinding white light would shine out from the back of the stage, illuminating the room and creating an even more dramatic atmosphere for the audience. Other highlights included “Black Out Days,” “Mouthful of Diamonds,” and “Come Alive.”
The band wrapped up the night with a performance of their hit “When I’m Small” before thanking the crowd and heading out for the night. For their first time back in nearly six years, Phantogram showed us that they didn’t forget anything about putting on a fantastic show. This Boston stop was a little over halfway through the “Running Through Colors” Tour, as the band will continue on through the midwest out to the west coast.
