Rising artist pilton started off in electronic and pop music remixing for notable artists including Illenium and The Spacies. Now he’s taking listeners along as he discovers his own sound.
His latest single “good for u” blends punk, rock and rap into what he considers “a statement to the artist I’m developing into; going to more dark pop-punk/rap and becoming more true to myself.”
We chatted with pilton to learn more about that journey, the single, and what fans can look forward to next.
What was the inspiration for your new single, “good for u”?
The inspiration behind the single was defo my love for punk, rap and pop and I really wanted to make a track that blended my love for all those genres and that highlighted the artist, producer, and songwriter I’m developing into – I think “good for u” sums it up completely.
What was the writing and production process like?
The production process was a lot of fun, I spent a few nights messing around with electric guitar concepts and got the chords and melodies down, then just built the layers from there, adding in and tracking drums and using my knowledge from past remixes and singles to add cool little quirks – like the voicemail messages, the phone call foleys all to make the track seem like a message – which added more meaning and depth to the vocal atop it. The writing process was super easy too with ‘Nvsh’ we were able to come up with a sick lyrical concept and he’s mad talented so i was bouncing off all his ideas – i think the writing only took us like a day haha!
Nvsh is featured on the single. How did you get connected and what was it like collaborating?
I reached out to him after looking for vocalists on Spotify and we clicked and got working asap. He’s such a chill guy, but also hella inspired and driven and it’s the best vibe to work alongside – you can feel the energy we put into the track take off when you listen to it I feel.
How does it feel to finally be making the music you want to make?
It feels great – I think a lot of artists feel this way sometimes and think it’s so freeing, but also drives me on. It’s sick to see everyone so shocked that one day I could come out with a chill-pop song and then the next come out with something so heavy, dark and powerful. Feels great to finally be able to become the artist I want to be.
If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to “good for u,” what do you imagine it looking like?
Hmmm maybe cruising down the 405 in LA blasting it in the car during sunset hour with your friends or a late night car drive after a break up haha if ur feeling sad.
What can fans look forward to next?
More of the same – more punk, more rock, more pop – just more of what I feel and want others to feel put into music.
What is one quote you have heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?
The one quote or motivating idea that sticks with me, especially with music, is that if things don’t work out, use failures as learning curves and as fuel to try again – everyone’s on a different path so don’t compare yourself to others and focus on you!
