22-year-old Layla Eden, aka awfultune, is back with her latest single “SICK OF YOU,” the second release of her six-part ‘color story.’
Corresponding with the color orange, ‘SICK OF YOU’ expresses an apathetic and decisive end to a relationship.
“I’m a firm believer that you have the right to cut off anyone that’s unhealthy for you,” said Eden in a statement. “You don’t need to carry the resentment you feel towards those toxic people in life that keep you around just to toy with your heart.”
Eden’s enunciated vocals push the message of the lyrics further, conveying that the breakup is well thought out on her part and non-negotiable.
In the buildup to the chorus, Eden is almost spitting out the words, metaphorically pushing the toxic person away… creating a sense of the catharsis that comes from being firm in one’s decision to put their foot down.
“SICK OF U” starkly contrasts the first release of the ‘color story’ project, “lovesick,” which is represented by the color red and all about falling hard.
Future releases of the ‘color story’ each cover “the unique highs and lows of [Eden’s] coming of age story, discovering herself and existing as a member of the LGBTQ+ community,” according to a press release.
Producing and releasing her music independently from her upstate New York bedroom since 2018, the singer-songwriter has been sharing her story of transitioning through her music as well as social media.
Although the vulnerability of sharing her identity is “completely terrifying” and “sometimes even downright uncomfortable,” Eden said that each track of the ‘color story,’ is an exploration and reflection of her journey of identity and being a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
On the inspiration of the project, Eden told PAPER “there are so many emotions we all go through daily and thankfully those are getting to be more positive with the shift culturally, but it is an extensive road for each and every one of us.”
Continually writing and producing, Eden/awfultune plans to release more music throughout the year.
