‘Somewhere To Die’ is the brand new EP from indie-pop artist, Ginesse.
Known for her Emmy nominated performance on Young and the Restless, as well as her role as Veronica in the off-Broadway production of Heathers: The Musical, Cait Fairbanks has adopted a new persona, Ginesse.
Under this moniker, Fairbanks creates candid and raw musical reflections of life’s defining moments, including love, heartbreak, mental health, career changes and friendship, a theme highlighted in the lead track “LA Isn’t Somewhere To Die.”
Ginesse chatted with ECHO about the EP, inspiration and more.
What first got you interested in music?
My dad introduced me to musical movies growing up and I would always start singing along. I moved around a lot growing up, so I saw music as an escape.
Who did you listen to growing up and do they have an influence on your sound today?
Honestly, I listened to whatever I could get my hands on. I think all the different genres I listened to definitely made me more open minded to genres and I hope my sound comes across that way. I was also obsessed with Spice Girls. I always wanted to be Baby Spice, but no one would let me because I had brown hair.
Where do you draw inspiration for your music?
If I have an emotional obsession I have to write about it to get it out. I try to take my time with writing and not get too methodical about it. If I have a system I’m worried that magic will go away.
Congratulations on the release of your debut EP, ‘Somewhere to Die.’ What was the writing and production process like for the EP?
We wrote it over the course of about 4 years. I was really apprehensive about putting anything out because I wanted to put out the most perfect version of myself. Once we wrote “LA Isn’t Somewhere To Die,” I knew I had to get over my intense fear of being perceived and let it grow.
How did you get connected with Matias Moras (CYN, AU/RA, The Aces) and what was it like to collaborate with him?
My roommate Sarah Huck introduced us! We went out to lunch across the street from his house and now we send each other crazy shit from the internet every day. He is the easiest person to work with and I’m so honored every time we get drunk together!
How do you hope people feel when they listen to your music?
I hope it makes them feel like they are listening to something familiar. I want my lyrics to sit too close to home or make people laugh. Any reaction is better than none.
If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to your EP, what do you imagine it looking like?
I picture a 70s-style sunken living room with a big white leather couch, wood paneling, a projector, all the lights off, and under a heated blanket.
Have you learned anything from acting that you have applied to your music or vice versa?
It’s fun to try on different characters. If I’m having a weird writer’s block moment I try to remember that songs can be about anything from any perspective.
What can fans look forward to next?
More music and more videos! I’m here to entertain and make content I’m excited about, so I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
What is one quote that you have heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?
Love many, trust few, and always paddle your own canoe.
