Ryder Beer is carving out his own space in the music industry as a multi-hyphenate producer and singer-songwriter, following in the footsteps of his older sister, pop sensation Madison Beer. Born in Long Island, the 22-year-old discovered his passion for music early on, starting with the drums. Although he earned a scholarship to Berklee School of Music after high school, he soon realized that traditional teaching methods didn’t suit his learning style, leading him to forge his path in the industry.
After capturing listeners’ hearts with his 2023 debut single, “Can’t Take It,” he’s ready to dive even deeper into the complexities of love and relationships with this new track. His latest single, “One That Got Away,” showcases his ability to blend electronic beats with relatable lyrics, capturing the bittersweet experience of love fading away.
As he continues to gain traction with listeners, Beer’s journey from a talented young musician to a rising star is a testament to his unique sound and heartfelt storytelling. In an exclusive interview, we delve into his creative process, the inspiration behind his new track, and his vision for the future.
“One That Got Away” explores the emotional crossroads of a fading relationship. Can you talk more about the inspiration behind the song and what that personal experience was like for you?
I’m sure everyone’s experienced the young love or even a current love that might or might not be going so well. This track is special to me in the aspect of letting my emotions tell a story that I hope everyone could hear.
You’ve mentioned that the song touches on a feeling many people can relate to, whether it’s a first love or a fleeting moment. What made you want to capture this particular experience in a dance-pop ballad?
“One That Got Away” is special for me and is going to be special for a lot of people. I feel it hits a lot of different emotions and relationship problems people have. I wanted to make a track that’s relatable to what goes on in relationships and how people feel about them these days and I feel like this track is a great example of it!
The lyrics “I’m all for second chances / I hope it’s not too late” are especially poignant. Can you walk us through the songwriting process for this track and how those lines came about?
I believe everyone deserves a second chance in life whether it’s a job, relationship or a friendship. It’s important to not take second chances for granted. It’s a gift to life everyone should appreciate.
As a producer and singer-songwriter, how do you navigate the creative process when you’re both writing and producing your own tracks?
I think it’s important to be with other people in the room that have your back and give you the confidence you need to be able to manage both.
You’ve described your music as a balance between indie-pop elements and reflective lyricism. How did you ensure that both the emotional and danceable aspects of the song were equally represented?
I wanted a track that everyone could listen to whether you’re driving late in a car or just hanging out on the couch. I also wanted a track that people could listen to as an upbeat song. It’s an emotional song I – wanted to hit all aspects.
Since releasing your debut single, “Can’t Take It,” in 2023, how do you feel your music and sound have evolved, and how does “One That Got Away” fit into that progression?
I think these songs correlate really well. They send a message out to people that they’re not alone and they bounce off each other. It’s almost like they’re both telling a story and each song is a chapter.
You’ve mentioned artists like The 1975, Lauv, and Frank Ocean as inspirations. In what ways have their music influenced your sound, particularly in “One That Got Away”?
I like to be unique and stay on my own and I feel like all these artists have that about them. They all like to stand out and I feel like this track stands out because of my signature that could be heard on my first track and pretty much all the songs that I’ve ever recorded.
Growing up with a globally recognized pop star as a sibling, how have you been able to carve out your own identity and sound as an artist?
Yeah, being Madison’s brother has definitely helped and I’ve learned a lot from her throughout the years. I think working with people and having them understand what kind of songwriter I am has made people realize that I really want to take the next level and I am in my own lane.
You made the decision to leave Berklee after a semester to focus on your own path in music. How has that decision shaped your approach to your career and creative process?
I actually met some really great people from Berklee. It was an awesome accomplishment getting into the school to begin with. I just felt like I needed to be more hands-on and start writing and releasing music as soon as possible.
“One That Got Away” feels like a pivotal moment in your career. What can listeners expect from the next chapter of your creative journey?
I hope they expect a lot because a lot is coming, and this isn’t the end. This is just the beginning. I hope all my music could be shared with the world eventually. Each song is a stepping stone and I really hope listeners enjoy my next single!
