GALLERY: Barns Courtney Gives a Raucous and Outright Unpredictable Opening Performance for The Struts

When British rocker Barns Courtney steps onto a stage even the most avid concertgoer has no idea what they’re in for. The 33 year old singer-songwriter has been on the map since his debut single “Fire” landed on several rock radio charts. This past July, he dropped his third studio album, “Supernatural,” his first since before the pandemic.

Courtney has become well known for raucous live performances that are outright unpredictable. On his visit to Boston over the weekend he went into the crowd multiple times to sing, took a fans phone to record a video of the crowd and stage, and dealt with a technical failure of his microphone by pulling out his acoustic guitar and singing at the absolute top of his lungs.

Courtney’s relationship with Boston is a long standing one, beginning with a performance he still often references as the time he played to “twelve people and a dog” as well as a performance at Paradise Rock Club when he performed a genuine encore, not a planned in the setlist one, but a genuine encore with the house lights up, the venue mix on and a crowd that willed him back to the stage.

His most recent visit to House of Blues Boston over this past weekend came in a supporting roll for glam rock revivalists The Struts. But Courtney’s performance was anything but that of a standard opening act as he delivered a non-stop, high energy set with the momentum of an out of control freight train, getting stronger and faster as the set went on.
