97th Academy Awards Nominations Announced: Emilia Pérez Leads with 13 Nods

The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards are officially in, and the excitement is already building for the ceremony set for Sunday, March 2, 2025. The night will be hosted by Conan O’Brien, and streamed on globally on ABC and Hulu.

On Thursday, actors Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang revealed the highly anticipated nominees during a live stream.

Leading the pack with an impressive 13 nominations was Emilia Pérez, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Lucia Pérez), and Best Actress (Ana María Sánchez). Hot on its heels, The Brutalist and Wicked each secured 10 nominations, with both films vying for the coveted Best Picture award.

The Brutalist, a dark exploration of power and corruption, has already garnered critical praise, particularly for Adrien Brody’s standout, Golden Globe winning performance. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures’ Wicked also continues to shine this award season with powerful performances from Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey. On social media, Erivo and Grande celebrated their Best Actress (Erivo) and Best Supporting Actress (Grande) nominations.

Grande’s emotional response to her nomination for Best Supporting Actress was especially heartfelt. In an Instagram post, she shared her gratitude, writing, “picking my head up in between sobs to say thank you so much to @theacademy for this unfathomable recognition. I cannot stop crying, to no one’s surprise.” Reflecting on her journey, she posted a childhood photo, writing, “i’m humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and sharing this with tiny ari who sat and studied Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow just before the big, beautiful bubble entered.”

Demi Moore has emerged as a frontrunner this award season with her commanding performance in The Substance. After securing a Golden Globe this year for Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, Moore earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. Her portrayal has captivated critics and audiences, showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress. With her Golden Globe already in hand, Moore’s momentum makes her one to watch as the Oscars draw closer.

Timothée Chalamet, fresh off his successes with Dune and Wonka, earned a Best Actor nomination for his transformative role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Chalamet’s ability to embody such a complex character has impressed critics and audiences, positioning him as a strong contender this year. He will face stiff competition from The Brutalist star Adrien Brody, who made history in 2003 as the youngest actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor at age 29 for his role in The Pianist. Over a decade later, Brody is proving his enduring talent with his first nomination in over a decade for his role in The Brutalist.

Grateful about it all.” Reflecting on the journey of making Sing Sing, he acknowledged the support of those around him, saying, “No one does this alone. I have so much love and faith and human beings around me.” Domingo’s message was filled with admiration for his peers: “To be recognized with my brothers that I admire.”

In another major surprise, I’m Still Here, the Brazilian feature that won Fernanda Torres the Golden Globe for Best Actress, earned nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature, and Best Actress. Torres’ acclaimed performance has been one of the season’s highlights, resonating deeply with both audiences and critics.

With these nominees and their extraordinary performances, the 97th Academy Awards promise to be a night to remember, offering a glimpse into the incredible range of talent that has defined this year in cinema.
