On Sunday, January 5, the front-runners in film and television descended upon the Beverly Hilton Hotel to officially kick off awards season with the Golden Globes.
The dazzling night was hosted by stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser, known for her sharp wit. Audiences previewed her humor back in September, when she ruthlessly roasted Tom Brady. She revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, that former Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais offered her some advice for tonight’s event, “Just do exactly what you did on the Tom Brady roast.”
From Tilda Swinton to Harrison Ford, no one was safe during Glaser’s opening monologue. She had the audience giggling over Timothée Chalamet’s name sounding like an Adam Sandler catchphrase and Selena Gomez being Benny Blanco’s genie wish come true. Most of the jokes landed. However, her joke about Ford wanting to work with indica missed the mark causing visible discomfort in the crowd.
Following her monologue, The Rock and Auli’i Cravalho presented Zoe Saldana with the Golden Globe for Female Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. “My heart is full of gratitude,” she tearfully said, thanking her Emilia Pérez cast, crew, and family, as her Mom smiled from the audience.
Jean Smart took home her second Golden Globe for Female Actor – Musical or Comedy for her role in Hacks. She previously won for the same role in 2022.
Kieran Culkin’s acknowledgement as Male Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for his role in A Real Pain, produced by Emma Stone, marked his sixth nomination and second win.
“The first ever acknowledgment I got as an actor was a Golden Globe nomination when I was basically a kid, and that meant a lot so the Golden Globes has a special place,” he reflected as he proudly dawned a collection of bracelets and temporary tattoos created and styled by his own kids.
Hioyuki Sanada turned his first nomination into his first win with the Golden Globe for Male Actor in a TV Series – Drama. “Thank you for everyone who has been in my life, all of you have brought me here,” he said, sincerely expressing his gratitude. He ended his speech by offering advice for “the young actors and creators,” “Please be yourself, believe in yourself and never give up. Good luck!”
Baby Reindeer actress Jessica Gunning won the statue for Best Supporting Female Actor – Television. She reminisced on an old home video of a eight year old Gunning overwhelmed by her new pet hamster, “I just kept saying, I can’t believe this is happening to me,” a phrase that defined 2024 for her.
“I realized this morning that that has been the soundtrack for my life this last year since Baby Reindeer came out. I cannot believe any of this is happening to me,” she told the crowd.
Shōgun picked up its second win of four for the night with Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano earning the award for Male Supporting Actor – Television. “This is a very big present for me…I am very happy,” Asano exclaimed. The second season of Shōgun is expected to go into production in 2025.
The gratitude continued with Male Actor in a Limited Series winner Colin Farrell who thanked Carolena at craft services during the production of The Penguin. “Carolena – on those cold winter nights in New York, where I was the only one overheating, she would be there with coconut water every half an hour. Carolena, God bless you. She kept the whole crew going,” Farrell said with heartfelt appreciation.
Demi Moore was deeply appreciative of her first ever award in her over 45 year career. “30 years ago I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress and at that time I made that mean that this wasn’t something I wasn’t allowed to have.” However, those 30 years have given her opportunity to reflect on what success means. “In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough – I had a women say to me just know you will never be enough but you can know the value of your work if you put down the measuring stick, and so today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me, and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong,” The Substance actress shared.
Fernanda Torres followed in her mom’s footsteps with her Golden Globe win for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for her role in I’m Still Here. Torres’ mother was the first Brazilian actress to win a Golden Globe, and now Torres is the second. “Of course I want to dedicate it to my mother. You have no idea, she was here 25 years ago. This is proof that art can endure through life, even in difficult moments.”
Adrien Brody carried the same sentiment in his acceptance speech for his performance in The Brutalist. While his parents looked on with pride, Brody explained, “The character’s journey is very reminiscent of my Mother’s and my ancestors’ journey of fleeing the horrors of war and coming to this great country. I owe so much to my Mother and my Grandparents’ sacrifice, and although I don’t know fully how to express all of the challenges that you have faced or experienced, and many people who have struggled immigrating to this country. I hope this work stands to lift you up and to give you a voice.”
Accepting the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Emilia Pérez, actress Karla Sofía Gascón spoke on behalf of her trans brothers and sisters, “You can put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you can never take away our soul, or existence, or identity. And I want to say to you, raise your voice and say ‘I am who I am, not who you want.’
The Brutalist also nabbed the other top spot of the night with Best Picture – Drama setting the crowd abuzz for what to expect at The Oscars on March 2, 2025.
