Rainsford is back with her first single of 2020. The track, “2 Cents” is an indie-pop dream, complete with an electric beat, catchy lyrics, and a retro feel.

The single’s release is paired with a vibrant video, which was directed by Dana Boulos.

Rainsford gave ECHO some insight about what inspired the single, the concept for the video, and what fans can expect next.

Where did you get the inspiration for your new single, “2 Cents”?

“2 Cents” like most of my music, is autobiographical.  At the time I wrote it, I was starting to see the problems with the relationship I was in.  I was still in very much in love but I knew I wasn’t getting what I needed. The pre chorus lyrics are, “the way you see it, it seems so far away. You know I feel it. Work through my co-dependency.”

What did the writing process for “2 Cents” look like?

The producer I worked on this (and many) of my songs with, Cameron Hale, had been sitting on the bones of the track for a while. At the start of our session, he was playing me a bunch of ideas that he already had started. I was really drawn to what eventually turned into “2 Cents.”  So once I had it in my ear, I wrote the lyrics and melody really quickly. We tracked the whole thing that day.

Where did the concept for the video come from?

I’ve been wanting to shoot a video of me riding a horse in a latex body suit through a beautiful landscape for some time now.  I have been waiting to release a song that made sense for the concept.

If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to “2 Cents” what would it look like?

I would trap everyone in their homes for a month with no toilet paper, so they have no choice but to listen to “2 Cents” on repeat…… no – definitely not that. I hope people listen in whatever way they enjoy listening to music the most! Maybe with a little room to boogie? But really I just hope people listen to it!

For people who are not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?

Freakin siiiiiiiiiiiiiick!!!!!

Favorite song to perform live?

Probably “Somewhere Else.”

When did you first develop your interest in music?

I’ve loved to sing since I could speak.  I also grew up dancing pretty intensely, which instilled a love of music in my body from a young age as well.

You helped write “Sad Boy” for Niia. How did you two get connected?

We met for coffee one afternoon and basically formed a mutual admiration club between the two of us.  The next week I went over to her place, and we wrote a bunch of songs in her bedroom. She’s really cool, talented, beautiful, and down to earth.

What can fans expect next?

I’m releasing six singles over the next six months, starting with this one. I’m also in the early stages of setting up a mix-tape kind of thing, to purge a bunch of songs I’ve written and have been holding on to for the last several years.

What is one quote that you’ve heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?

THE GOLDEN RULE, BABY!!
