EXCLUSIVE: Barret Turner Talks Inspiring Single “Always You”

Barret Turner has been writing music ever since he first picked up a guitar as a kid. After focusing on composing for the past 5 years, the Dallas artist is finally ready to debut his music.

Beginning this past summer, Turner has been releasing a single a month off his 10 track debut record.

We chatted with the singer-songwriter and producer about this inspiring second single, “Always You” ft. Will Jay and more.

How did you first get interested in music?

I’ve loved music ever since I can remember. My dad would always play music in the garage while we swam or played in the yard or watched the rain. He would always play Hootie and the Blowfish.

How would you describe your sound?

I’d describe it as happy sad music…. but I feel like at the end of each song there is an inspiring message. It’s in the realm of electronic music, but with a lot of piano.

You’ve been working on this new project for 5 years now. How does it feel to finally have two singles out in the world?

It feels amazing. I have 3 out now and getting ready to release my fourth. It feels good putting them out because I know i’m not going to stop now.

What was the inspiration for your latest single, “Always You”?

The inspiration was my friend’s mom. When I wrote the music it was about her struggling with cancer. By the time the song was finished, she had passed away and the song ended up being about my friend and his journey of recovering from his mothers loss and finding himself.

What was the writing process like?

Musically, the song started in my bedroom, just me and my thoughts.  It came heavy from this piano part I always play that I really like. Then it was mixed and mastered at a professional studio and I then started pitching it to singers. I sent Will Jay about 8 songs and he really liked this one. It ended up fitting perfectly. We would email back and forth lyric ideas. We have never actually met in person.

Will Jay is featured on the track. How did you get connected and what was it like to collaborate?

Email. I email singers all day and a ton don’t even respond but sometimes you get a yes:). I just emailed him explaining how I love his voice and I’d love for him to sing on one of my songs.

If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to “Always You,” what do you imagine it looking like?

Oh dang, That’s tough. My simple answer is alone driving in your car at night. The best answer would be on a mountain, any mountain sunrise or sunset. I’d like to listen then.

Why did you decide to release each of the songs on your upcoming album as singles?

Nobody knows who I am. I figured if I released an album would people even hear it? Im releasing them all as singles to just try to grow a fan base. New content every month.

What can fans look forward to next?

I have a new song called “Never Stood” out now. They should go check that out.

What is one quote that you have heard or that you go by that you want to ECHO out to the world?

Mike Posner walked across America. I watched his entire journey until he finished in California. He would always scream out. KEEP GOING!!!! I really liked that.

KEEP GOING!!!
