On August 5, pop artist Carly Rae Jepsen released her new single, “Beach House.” The single follows dreamy track “Western Wind,” which was released in May, and precedes her upcoming album, The Loneliest Time

“Beach House” presents the horrors of app-based dating through recollections of Jepsen’s many mishaps in love. The beat-heavy track features claps, punchy drums, light guitar strums, and poppy bass on the offbeat. One of the most audibly compelling aspects is the male voices that sing various quotes in the song’s chorus and bridge, giving the men who wronged Jepsen some voice in her story. However, these voices are dealt with in a comedic way, playfully hyperbolizing with promises like, “I’ve got a lake house in Canada, and I’m probably gonna harvest your organs”. The song is as much fantasy as it is reality, told through exaggerated lyrics riddled with honest frustration.

On August 12, Jepsen released a bright, comedic music video for “Beach House”. In the visual, Jepsen discusses her romantic issues with two married friends on the beach. When they ask what the dating scene is like, she reenacts her experiences to the sound of the dance track, singing in a sea of male backup dancers. Elaborate sets of houses and tropical backdrops are placed on the sand, and Jepsen dons bright bikinis and bubblegum pink sunglasses in the warm sunlight. The video matches the playful energy of the track, adding to the summery feel that “Beach House” captures so well.

The Loneliest Time is currently available for pre-order and will be released on October 21. Next month, Jepsen is embarking on The So Nice Tour. Tickets are available on her website
